Daxing'anling

Northern lights

A TOURISM festival is under way in Daxing'anling in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. Visitors may enjoy visits to the forests and appreciate the northern lights. Mohe is the best place in the country to see the lights, and now is the best season.

Tianjin

Folk arts show

TIANJIN Municipality is holding its first Civil Arts Exposition from September 30 to October 8. Tianjin is home to a number of celebrated folk artists such as "Clay-figurine Zhang," "Kite Wei," "Brick-carving Liu" and "Wood-carving Liu." Also well-known are the paintings of Yangliuqing County. Masterpieces of folk art from China and abroad will be represented. Artists will give live performances to show off their respective skills.

Qinhuangdao

Villa tour

VILLAS once used by the famous in Beidaihe in the coastal resort of Qinhuangdao in North China's Hebei Province are now open to the public. There were once 2,000 such villas there, more than anywhere else in the country except Mount Lushan in East China's Jiangxi Province. Such personages as Marshal Zhu De and the Kuomintang's Zhang Xueliang once lived there. About 300 of the villas remain.

Inner Mongolia

Prairie tour

NOW is the time to visit the Inner Mongolian prairie, when the grass and flowers are at their best and the locals put on a series of programmes for tourists. You may ride camels wearing traditional costume, try your hand at wrestling with the strong and robust young local men, or sit in traditionally decorated tents. From July 2 to 4 there is a mountain-climbing contest in Etuoke Banner, Yikezhao League. From July 6 to 7, a tourism festival will be held in Xiwuzhumuqin Banner, Xilinguole League.

Zhouzhuang

Refurbishment

IN the next two years, some 60 per cent of hawkers and inns will be moved out of the old downtown area of Zhouzhuang, in East China's Jiangsu Province, in order to restore as much of the original character of the water town as possible.

Fujian

Relic park

THE World Relic Display Park is now open in Wuyi Mountain, in East China's Fujian Province. Miniatures of the Eiffel Tower, the Arena of Rome and 27 Chinese wonders are on display.
