Active
participation of HK NPC registration (11/08/2002)
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) has witnessed enthusiastic
signing up for the candidacy of deputies to the 10th National People's
Congress (NPC) of China, which attracted 68 participants in a four-
day period by Thursday.
Of the 68, nine electioneers have formally handed in their registration
forms, which demand at least 10 nominations for the registration to
be effective.
Ma Lik, a HK deputy to the 9th NPC, has won 63 nominations from
the 953 members of the Conference for Electing Deputies of the HKSAR
to the 10th NPC of China.
Ma said he is making active preparations for contesting the election,
including sending his personal information and viewpoints to all
the members of the electoral conference.
Ma pledged that, if elected as a deputy to the 10th NPC, he will
try his utmost to seek solutions for the issues the Hong Kong people
are concerned with.
Kan Fook-yee, executive director of Henderson China Holdings Limited,
said on handing in his registration form that he has been engaged
in promoting the cooperation between the HKSAR and the Chinese mainland
during his last two terms as deputies to the NPC.
He said that he competes for the candidacy of the NPC deputy once
again with a view to making his contributions to the development
of Hong Kong and China as a whole.
Wong Yuk-shan, vice president of the City University of Hong Kong,
was the first to arrive at the registration office in Sheung Wan
to collect the registration form on Nov. 7.
"In this intense election, what matters most is taking part,
instead of success or failure," Wong said, adding that even
if he failed in the election, he would enjoy happiness all the same
as it demonstrates that another 36 persons are more outstanding
than him.
According to election methods, the maximum number of the nominees
can exceed the quota of 36 deputies by 50 percent. Should nominees
turn out to be more than that, a preliminary round of election will
be held on Nov. 29 to meet the requirement, and the official round
of election is scheduled for Dec. 3.
