academician elected mayor of Wuhan (04/16/2002)
Zhou Ji, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE),
was elected mayor of Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, by the local
legislature Monday.
Zhou, 55, is the country's second academician becoming a mayor.
Zhou's fellow academician Xu Kuangdi was elected mayor of Shanghai
in 1995.
Zhou graduated from Qinghua University and received a Ph.D. from
the State University of New York.
He is currently deputy secretary of the Wuhan Municipal Committee
of the Communist Party of China.
