  CAE academician elected mayor of Wuhan (04/16/2002)

Zhou Ji, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), was elected mayor of Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, by the local legislature Monday.

Zhou, 55, is the country's second academician becoming a mayor. Zhou's fellow academician Xu Kuangdi was elected mayor of Shanghai in 1995.

Zhou graduated from Qinghua University and received a Ph.D. from the State University of New York.

He is currently deputy secretary of the Wuhan Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China.

Jiang Zemin, in his report to the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, said the Party's door is open to all positive factors of the society, including private entrepreneurs, foreign-invested firm employees, self-employed businessmen and freelance professionals, he also said that the Party should advance with the times.
