  Northern province elects senior official (04/16/2002)

The first plenary session of the 8th Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) elected its leaders Tuesday.

Tian Chengping was elected as secretary of the 8th CPC Shanxi Provincial Committee. Liu Zhenhua, Liu Zemin, Zhang Baoshun, Hou Wujie and Jin Yinhuan were elected deputy secretaries.

Jin Yinhuan was also elected secretary of the Shanxi Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC. Zhang Luxu, Wang Junzhong, Liu Huansheng and Li Tansheng were elected deputy secretaries of the commission.

Tian Chengping, a native of Daming County, Hebei Province, graduated from the Civil Engineering and Architecture Department of Qinghua University in 1968.

Tian used to work for Beijing's Yanshan Petrochemical Corporation and has acted as deputy secretary of the CPC Yanshan Petrochemical Corporation Committee and secretary of the CPC Xicheng District Committee of Beijing.

He was governor of Qinghai Province from 1993 to 1997 and chairman of the Standing Committee of the Qinghai Provincial People's Congress from 1998 to 1999.

He was appointed as a Standing Committee member and secretary of the CPC Shanxi Provincial Committee in June 1999.

Jiang Zemin, in his report to the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, said the Party's door is open to all positive factors of the society, including private entrepreneurs, foreign-invested firm employees, self-employed businessmen and freelance professionals, he also said that the Party should advance with the times.
