  New governor elected for Hunan province (04/16/2002)

Zhang Yunchuan, 55, was elected governor of Hunan province in central China on Saturday.

Zhang, a native of Dongyang city, in east China's Zhejiang province, won the election at the fifth session of the Ninth Provincial People's Congress of Hunan.

A graduate from the Harbin Military Engineering Institute in northeast China, Zhang served as deputy governor of east China's Jiangxi province and then vice chairman of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Government before he was posted to Hunan in 1999. He served in Hunan as deputy secretary of the provincial committee of the Chinese Communist Party, deputy governor and acting governor of Hunan between 1999 and early 2002.

Jiang Zemin, in his report to the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, said the Party's door is open to all positive factors of the society, including private entrepreneurs, foreign-invested firm employees, self-employed businessmen and freelance professionals, he also said that the Party should advance with the times.
