Wang Zhongyu
Wang Zhongyu (1933- ), native of Changchun, Jilin Province.
State Councillor; secretary general of State Council; president
of National School of Administration.
Wang was born into an intellectual family. In his childhood, he
read Confucian classics, such as Four Books (the Great Learning,
the Doctrine of the Mean, Confucian Analects and the Book of Mencius)
and Five Classics (the Book of Songs, the Book of History, the Book
of Changes, the Book of Rites and the Spring and Autumn Annals).
He studied at the Shenyang Light Industry Vocational School from
1950 to 1953. Wang worked in grassroots units for many years as
technician, deputy workshop head, engineer, deputy factory director
and chief engineer.
He served successively as deputy director Jilin Provincial No.1
Light Industrial Bureau, 1980-1981, studied at the Party School
of CPC Central Committee, 1981-1982, and served as director and
secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group of the Jilin Provincial
No. 1 Light Industry Department, 1982-1983.
He served as director of the Research Office of the Jilin Provincial
Party Committee, Standing Committee member and concurrently secretary
general of the provincial Party committee, 1983-1985. He was deputy
secretary of CPC Jilin Provincial Committee, and vice governor,
acting governor and governor of Jilin Province, 1985-1992.
He served as deputy director and deputy Party secretary of the
Production Office under State Council, deputy director and deputy
secretary of Leading Party Members' Group of State Council's Economic
and Trade Office, 1992-1993.
From 1993-1998, he served as minister in Charge of the State Economic
and Trade Commission.
He was alternate member of 13th CPC Central Committee, and member
of 14th and 15th CPC Central Committees.
Wang likes literature and history books. When he was young, enjoyed
ball games, especially basketball and volleyball. He once joined
a city team.
Wang was elected State Councillor and secretary general of State
Council on March 18, 1998.
Wang was appointed president of National School of Administration,
May 1998; head of the 5th National Census Leading Group of the State
Council, June 1998.
In 1999, he attended the Macao handover ceremony as a member of
Chinese Government Delegation.
