| New leadership
of China's top advisory body elected (03/14/2003)
The leadership for the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's
Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) was elected Thursday at
the fourth plenary meeting of the national advisory body's annual
session in Beijing.
Jia Qinglin, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political
Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee,
was elected chairman of the 10th National Committee of the CPPCC.
The meeting also elected 24 vice-chairpersons, of whom 13 are new
faces, a secretary-general and 299 Standing Committee members.
Before the results of the election was announced, Chairman of the
Ninth National Committee of the CPPCC Li Ruihuan arrived at the
meeting and extended his congratulations on the incoming new leadership.
After the presider announced Jia Qinglin has been elected chairman
of the 10th National Committee of the CPPCC, Li and Jia shook hands
warmly amid long applause from the 2,152 attendees.
The vice-chairpersons are Wang Zhongyu, Liao Hui, Liu Yandong (female),
Ngapoi Ngawang Jigme, Ba Jin, Pagbalha Geleg Namgyai, Li Guixian,
Zhang Siqing, Ding Guangxun, Henry Ying Tung Fok, Ma Man-kei, Bai
Lichen, Luo Haocai, Zhang Kehui, Zhou Tienong, Hao Jianxiu (female),
Chen Kuiyuan, Abdul'ahat Abdurixit, Xu Kuangdi, Li Zhaozhuo, Huang
Mengfu, Wang Xuan, Zhang Huaixi, and Li Meng.
Zheng Wantong was re-elected secretary-general of the National
Committee of the CPPCC.
