Wan: Is Shanghai your headquarters for China, Greater China or Asia Pacific, and since when? What were your sales or business revenues in China for 2004? What will drive your company in, and out, of Shanghai as a regional headquarter? What are your most important concerns on Shanghai as your regional headquarter or future headquarter. Yorke: HSBC relocated its China head office from Hong Kong to Pudong, Shanghai in May 2000 and acquired floor space and naming rights to HSBC Tower at a cost of over US$33 million. This further demonstrates HSBC's commitment to the long-term development of its China business. Letters to the Mayor The followings are suggestions from the global business community to Mayor Han Zheng to help make Shanghai a world metropolis. Yorke: We are one of the very few international companies that even have "Shanghai" in our name - The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. Stachels: Why not build a masterplan for Shanghai as the "Green Metropolis" for Asia Pacific? The proposal would be to form an Environmental Technology Advisory Committee with the participation of enterprises, who have clear concepts and can contribute, together with academic institutions and governmental authorities. Mayor's view: Shanghai by 2020 The following is the full text of the speech by Mayor Han Zheng in meeting with the delegates to the China Daily CEO Roundtable in Shanghai. I believe everybody in the room has some knowledge about the past and present of Shanghai. Under the guidance of the central government, Shanghai is considering its plans. Next year, our country will launch the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-11). Shanghai is also set to draft its social and economic development plan for the period. The general goal of our city is to become an international economic, financial, trade and shipping centre. This goal was tailored for Shanghai by the central government and matches the theme of this roundtable - 2020: The World's Shanghai. We designed two stages for the achievement of our goals. Making Shanghai a world city By Luo Man In the last 15 years Shanghai has leapt forward and positioned itself as the gateway to China. Now the city is caught between its forward momentum and the challenges it must overcome. Can it - will it - become one of the world's centres for finance, commerce and shipping? Will it elevate itself into a hub and a gateway, for China and for Asia Pacific? "It seems to me that today's topic is about a dream, the dream of a global metropolis," said China Daily's Editor-in-Chief Zhu Ling at the opening of the newspaper's 12th CEO Roundtable in Shanghai on Friday. "Shanghai has surprised the world with tremendous achievement along the way building itself into a centre for the world economy, finance, shipping and trade."

"I am very delighted to see this CEO Roundtable organized by China Daily, and your theme today 'The World's Shanghai by 2020' actually matches entirely with our own goal, Mr. Han Zheng, mayor of Shanghai, said in his opening remarks when he met with delegates over the weekend.

Few envy the jobs of CEOs and presidents in charge of China or Greater China operations these days. The mounting pressure from global headquarters, employees, customers and shareholders to growing, winning or surviving in the China market keeps any CEO in charge of China "stretched as hell."

No melodrama. China CEOs actually need much more help than their colleagues running operations in other countries.

The reason is simple: China is probably much more complicated than any other country. Local knowledge, or information-in-context, is what they need most. One of the best sources to gain such critical knowledge, is to learn from their peers.

The China Daily CEO Roundtable was created and launched to serve just that need. Since its inception in April 2004, more than 500 CEOs, senior executives and government leaders have taken part in 12 roundtables on various topics that are central to China's economy or business and social development.

Delegates were invited according to their current or potential impact on their respective sectors or to China's economic growth as a whole.

The key task is "collective learning" among fellow CEOs behind closed doors.

"I have long been overdosed by those big forums and conferences with hundreds of people," said one delegate, "and I found this China Daily network is second to none in putting the right people on the right topic at the right time."

As a service to the global business community by China Daily, the country's only nationwide English-language newspaper, the China Daily CEO Roundtables have put CEOs and senior executives face-to-face with senior government leaders.

They get first-hand information about China's most important policies, economic developments and social changes; to establish personal relationship and explore public-private partnership initiatives; and to make China their best performing market and, equally important, their homes.

Future roundtables will cover China's banking, logistics, telecom, lifestyle, education, health care, high technology, sustainable development, social welfare, entertainment, and others in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and other major cities.

China Daily CEO Roundtables are rapidly emerging as the voice of global business in China and the private club of the movers and shakers from the government, business, academic, cultural and social sectors.
