Helping the poor in culture

In 1994, the Helping the Poor Through Culture Committee was founded and initiated the Project for 10,000 Rural Libraries in the same year. It set up small libraries in about 20,000 villages and donated 100 categories of books to each one. In addition, it helped to build 28 satellite TV relay stations in poor mountainous areas and offered 21,000 tapes of excellent film or television programs to 200 poor counties. The committee also advocates that city children make friends with rural ones. By the end of 1994, 1 million couples of children involved in this activity set up three "hand in hand" Hope primary schools with the money donated by children across the country.

1995 witnessed a plan to set up "the camp for the Chinese children's hand-in-hand activity" in scenic Jigong Mountains in Henan Province, and to build a Hope School in Lhasa, Tibet. From 1995, the country increased the special fund for helping poor children receive compulsory education. It is anticipated that a total of five to six billion yuan of funds will be put in by the year 2000.
